Open Door was established in Arcata, in 1971, to meet chronic shortage of access to healthcare in Humboldt County.
Since then, Open Door has grown to meet the needs of communities throughout Humboldt and Del Norte counties, offering a wide and growing range of services. While health centers nationally serve one in seven Californians, Open Door sees two thirds of all people on the North Coast and plays a key role in California’s North Coast:
- Driving the local economy, by employing 600 people in Humboldt and Del Norte counties
- Holding health fairs throughout the year, for public health education and community outreach
- Pursuing innovative methods for addressing health and wellness, such as its community gardens in Arcata, Eureka, Willow Creek, Fortuna and Crescent City
- Developing residency programs to improve access to health care in the region
