Open Door Pediatric Services


Family practice services for all of your primary medical needs, including diagnosis, treatment and referral for more advanced care as necessary. Clinic provides diagnosis and treatment for acute illnesses (such as flu, colds, aches and pains, fatigue) and chronic conditions (including diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, emphysema). Routine health screenings, immunizations and boosters, and lab tests are provided as appropriate. We work to help you with disease prevention, health maintenance activities and ways you can take care of yourself. Well-child examinations and annual adult check-ups offered to all patients.

Health Access Assistance Program (HAAP): HAAP staff available to all DNCHC patients for free assistance services including application assistance for public insurance programs and information on available community resources. HAAP Office at the Wellness Center, Suite 200. Monday-Friday 8:30am-6:30pm and Saturday 9:30am-1:30pm. Walk-In and appointments accepted. (707) 465-1988

Additional services at the Del Norte Community Health Center include: Pediatrics, Behavioral Health Counseling, Diabetes Education, Nutritional Counseling, Teen Clinic (see, HIV/AIDS testing and treatment, Hepatitis C treatment, Nutritional Counseling, and Women’s Health. Patients established at the Del Norte Community Health Center can be referred to other Open Door clinics, including the Telehealth & Visiting Specialist Center, for additional and specialty services. Referral to and coordination with other specialists are provided as needed, with follow-up care in the clinic. The clinic also provides follow-up care after hospital stays. The clinic has 20 private examination rooms, with five physicians, two mid-level practitioners, and a clinical psychologist on staff.

Young children should be seen often for immunizations and regular well-child examinations (our pediatrician can explain the best schedule of visits). Older children and adults should be seen for routine check-ups every year. Public or private coverage is typically available for children. Coverage for adults depends on a number of factors; we will assist you in determining eligibility for Medi-Cal, Medicare, CMSP, Family PACT and other programs. Those without insurance are eligible for discounts based on income and ability to pay. We accept most private insurances.

Katrina Groves, MD
Katrina Groves, MDDoctor of Medicine
Dr Katrina Groves, Originally from the southern California area, graduated from the medical school of Pennsylvania in 1989 and returned to California for her 3 years of residency in Family practice. In August of 1992, she relocated to Del Norte County under the National Health Service corps program. She and her husband (Dr. Rehwaldt) planned to serve their time and move on, but soon found they loved the area. With its unspoiled beauty of oceans and redwoods, and the absence of smog or traffic and other “big city” problems, they decided to stay and raise a family.
Dr. Groves has been dedicated to the underserved patients of our area and to the Open door clinic for over 15 years. Her special interests in medicine include women’s health and she is a member of the American society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. She is also certified with the American Academy of Pain Management and is a Civil Surgeon.

In her leisure time, she enjoys making and firing her own pottery, learning to play the viola, hiking in the redwoods, and swimming the rivers and ocean with her two sons. She feels privileged to care for and be a part of her patients’ lives.

Gurjit Marwah, MD

Dr. Gurjit Marwah is a Board Certified Pediatrician/Neonatologist who has been in practice for over twenty five years. He has relocated from Oxnard/Ventura to Del Norte County recently, and looks forward to making the area his new home. He has raised two children of his own. When working with his patients he is empathic and caring.

On his time off, Dr. Marwah enjoys tennis, golf, skiing, cooking, kite flying, egg shell carving, hiking and traveling.

Clint Pearson, MD

Dr. Clint Pearson graduated from University of California San Diego in 1996. He then moved to Merced, California where he completed the three year residency program at Merced Community Medical Center in 1999 and became Board certified.
After spending two years in Montana working at Crow Agency, Dr. Pearson returned to California to serve the community of Crescent City. He joined Open Door Community Health Center in May, 2005 and has been a HIV Specialist and Hepatitis C provider for the past ten years.

Dr. Pearson’s passion for medicine is followed closely by his passion for writing. After publishing a book in 2009 he is now in the process of writing two screenplays. Mostly he enjoys spending time with his two children and wife Ursula of thirty years, taking in all that the Redwood coast has to offer.

Warren Rehwaldt, MD

Dr. Warren Rehwaldt moved to Del Norte County with his wife, Dr. Katrina Groves in 1992 and has been with Open Door, at least part time, since 1999. He has worked as a local physician in several capacities, including over 5 years as sole physician provider in Del Norte County for United Indian Health Services, four years with Crescent City Family Practice, and 2 years as a contracted hospitalist. He has served as Del Norte County Public health officer, now entering his ninth year in that capacity. He has been a member of the First Five Commission of Del Norte County for almost a decade and currently serves as a Board member for Sutter Coast Hospital. He has been a Sutter Coast Medical Staff officer at various times, for a total of over 8 years of service.

He and his wife raised two children in Del Norte county, now both young adults. He has outside interests in several local music and theater groups, as he plays string bass and violin, as well as singing. He is also an avid fisherman “but not as much as I used to, and never as much as I’d like to” for both river salmon and steelhead, and occasionally local ocean fishing. He enjoys hiking and the outdoors in general, one of the many reasons he enjoys living and working in the Del Norte community.

Karolina Dembinski, DO

Dr. Karolina Dembinski is a board certified pediatrician who joined our Del Norte Open Door team in August 2015.

She was born in Poland, and lived there for part of her childhood before moving to the United States.

She earned an undergraduate degree (B.S., 2003) from the University of Florida, where she majored in Food Science & Human Nutrition and minored in Zoology. She received her medical degree (D.O.) from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (2007).

After completing her pediatric residency at the University of South Florida (2010), she joined the USF faculty as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. Then in 2012, she moved to California and worked several years at the Community Health Center in Lompoc prior to moving to “where the ocean meets the redwoods”.

Dr. Dembinski’s interests have involved the arts in medicine, environmental awareness, as well as advocacy and serving indigent populations. She likes to promote wellness and practice medicine in a holistic / integrative manner.

As a longtime native of Crescent City, I have grown to know and appreciate both the opportunities and challenges that living in this remote location can bring. With this background I am passionate about bringing excellent primary healthcare to anyone in need. I also enjoy working with the whole individual, spirit, soul and body, to bring real and lasting health. My education at Humboldt State University and Physicians Assistant School at UC – Davis has provided me with the skills to bring a high level of care to Del Norte County.
Frederick A. Mayer, DPM

Dr. Frederick Mayer was born and raised in Long Island, New York. He received his B.S. in Biology from Syracuse University in upstate New York. He earned his medical degree from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco, followed by a surgical residency in San Jose. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

In California, he met and married Karen, who has been his bride and joy for over thirty years. Eventually they settled in San Diego, where Dr. Mayer was in private practice for ten years.

In 1996, Dr. Mayer joined a large multi-specialty medical group in Orange County, California. While serving in this capacity for eighteen years, Dr. Mayer dedicated himself to providing quality, compassionate foot and ankle care, while working in concert with primary care physicians, nurses and ancillary medical staff.

Since joining Open Door Community Health Clinic, Dr. Mayer’s expertise continues to provide medical treatment for patient’s foot and ankle needs, in the Del Norte and Eureka clinics.

He enjoys exploring new areas through travel, hiking the beaches and forest trails of the area, and most of all, time spent with his wife sharing their lives together.

While on an educational art and literature odyssey throughout ten European Countries Janet became fascinated with human behavior and different cultures. After traveling for six months, Janet returned to the states and made it her quest to help others by leaving the food industry and gearing her education towards psychology and Social Work. With 25 years of Social Work practice in both intercity and rural areas, outpatient clinical settings, inpatient hospitals and 17 years experience of home visit work in both Mental Health and medical positions, Janet still takes pride in helping others live their lives’ to the best of their ability in the least restrictive environments.

I was born and raised in Sebastopol, Ca. and was the first in my family to attend college. I graduated from San Jose State University with my Masters in Social Work in 2006. I went on to earn my Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in 2010 while working at Napa State Hospital, where I worked for four years. That was followed by four years at the Veteran’s Administration in Mendocino county.

I have been employed at Del Norte Community Health Center since January, 2016 and it is an honor to serve this community.

Helping people and animals is my passion.

Hiking the beautiful trails of Del Norte County keeps me grounded.
