open door garden1

Open Door Community Health Centers provides healthcare outside of the clinic environment in our Community Health and Wellness Gardens. With four community gardens in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, Open Door gives access to fresh and local produce, an opportunity to spend time in nature, and inspiration for preparing healthy meals.

Open Door’s Gardens and Food Resources (GFR) Program is a part of the Member Services Department which provides many different support services, such as navigation and enrollment assistance for health programs and community resources, in alignment with Open Door’s mission to promote social justice and human dignity through exceptional patient-centered care that improves the health and well-being of our patients, community, and staff.

Our Mission

The Gardens and Food Resources team strives to advance health equity and build community through

co-creating nourished and culturally affirming food environments and inclusive garden programs.

Program Areas

Garden-Based Education

Garden staff operates and facilitates garden-based education at our four Community Health and Wellness Garden sites. Each site is unique in its programming, building off the strengths of the site location, the interests of patients and the community, and collaborative opportunities with health center care teams, developing clinical programs and initiatives, and community partners.

Food and Nutrition Initiatives

The gardens team works to advance best practices in addressing the health needs of our community with the recognition that food and nutrition security are significant in physical and mental health outcomes. The gardens are one part of a coordinated effort to increase patient access to diverse food resources. In Humboldt, the program is connected to our focused work on CalFresh outreach, education, and enrollment support.

CalFresh is California’s statewide food program that helps you buy groceries when you’re out of work or working less.
